It was the fall of
1981 and Bob and Pat Hannon had reached a point in their lives where a
serious decision had
to be made regarding their finances. Bob, a business
teacher at Sandwich High School, and Pat,
an administrative assistant
at a local
department store, had two children; Bobby, a sophomore at Connecticut
College and Julie, a junior in high school. In two years both children
would be in college and the Hannon's present income would never suffice.
Thus, Ice Cream
Sandwich was born.Over the
winter of
1982, Bob worked in several homemade ice cream establishments to learn
how to make ice cream, with the help of his high school students, decided
on Flavors, a name
(Ice Cream Sandwich in Sandwich) and a philosophy.
Basically the philosophy
was to offer the freshest and creamiest product possible. To accomplish
this goal, they decided to never compromise on quality. For example, Pat
would pick bushels of strawberries each spring at harvest time and Bob
would always add a third more of this ingredient, than the recipe required
when he made his ice cream. Beyond that they always made their whipped
cream fresh and Pat baked fresh cookies daily for her hand made ice cream
sandwiches.
Over the years the
reputation of Ice Cream Sandwich spread until it has become a "must" stop for locals and tourists alike.
Why? How about the
wide variety of products they have made available: If you like homemade
ice cream you have to try several of their twenty flavors and specials
offered daily. Always included in those flavors are Cape Cod Chocolate
Chunk (chocolate ice cream with white and dark chocolate pieces), Hazelnut
Coffee and Non Fat Coffee Heath Bar Yogurt.

Since 1982, when Ice Cream Sandwich began
in business, many awards have come its way
including the best of Upper Cape Cod, Sandwich,
and regional recognition by Boston radio
stations WEEI and WRKO.
However, the
highlight of all these recognition occurred in
May of 1996 when two of the Hannon's employees
wrote a thirty page marketing report on Ice
Cream Sandwich, entered it in a local and state
competition where they finished in first place.
Then, in
Orlando Civic Center before 12,000 students,
Christina Koestner and Kelly O'Brien's report
was judged the best in the country. The report
was published and sold throughout the country.
The feeling of
pride that the Hannon's had that two of their
employees would devote such an effort to a
project was indescribable and is an indication
of the atmosphere that working at Ice Cream
Sandwich has generated.
